Encouraging healthy competition among our students
Providing a classical framework for the organization of students
Presenting opportunities for student leadership in our upper school program.
The Coventry House System comprises six houses: Bonhoeffer, Elliot, Equiano, Lewis, Watchman and Wilberforce. Each house has faculty deans and student leaders called stewards.
Students are assigned to a house upon reaching the 6th grade or upon transferring into the Coventry upper school program, and will remain in that house until graduation. Siblings follow the oldest sibling into the same house.
The primary roles of the faculty deans is to foster leadership in and through the student leaders of the house, and to serve as the supervisors of the house members during designated house times and activities.
Deans come alongside their stewards in order to help the house complete tasks, but if and when the house deans do the work for the stewards they rob the stewards of important leadership lessons, as well as enabling character traits that are in conflict with Christian virtue.
The primary role of a steward is to lead their house through the year; organizing, delegating, cheerleading, and working through the various house tasks and activities. Another role of the student leaders is to serve as devotional coordinators for their house. Devotionals will be held within the houses approximately 1 time per month throughout the school year.
The success of the house system would be less than complete without the help and support of the parents. There are many ways that the houses will rely on the support of all parents throughout the year. These include: contributing toward house projects such as the Coventry Auction project, signing up to bring food or materials for house parties and events, encouraging and motivating your child(ren) to have a positive and upbeat attitude about their house (especially when things are not going well). A few parents will also be needed to serve as a house parent(s) for a year.
One of the main tenets of the house system is that of competition. At all times, the goal should be to foster a healthy climate such that the students and deans engage in vigorous and robust competition, but where they are able to come together in the end in a community of mutual love and respect. The houses will compete in a variety of ways including academic olympics, house games, house challenges, participation in school events, house GPA rankings, etc.
At the conclusion of the year, the Coventry House Cup will be awarded to the house earning the greatest percentage of points possible among a variety of categories!
