Recitation
Lower School students participate in a 10 minute Recitation period each morning. Over the course of a three year cycle, they memorize and recite more than 200 pieces. At Coventry, we believe that an education forms a certain kind of person. Instilling our students with wisdom from Scripture, theology, hymns, poetry, classic songs, and rhymes sets a joyful foundation for the godly men and women our students will become.

Arts Education
Music, art, and drama in the Lower School cultivate our students’ creativity and guide them toward God-honoring expression of their gifts. Music: Beginning in kindergarten, children are taught the musical notes and spaces using the whole body Kodaly method. Art: Students experience history with their hands as they craft, mold, draw, paint, and build projects that reflect their time period of study. Drama: In addition to classroom skits, Lower School students can participate in Coventry’s annual spring musical. Recent productions include The Odyssey, Esther, and Alice Through the Looking Glass.

History is a record of God’s providence over time. Lower School students walk through history from creation to present day in grades 2-5, engaging in history through rhymes, chants, timelines, dramatic productions, and other activities. Other subjects such as literature, art, writing, and spelling draw from each grade’s history study as well. Lastly, each fall, the Lower School collaborates on a grand History Day celebration where students experience the work, play, food, crafts, and lifestyle of people from another time. Whether our students are painting under their desks like Michelangelo or staging their own Olympic Games, we help students find their own place in time by recognizing those who came before them and God’s sovereign care over all.

As Thomas Jefferson wrote, “If the body is feeble, the mind will not be strong.” Regular movement strengthens the body and sharpens the mind. In our physical education classes, we teach calisthenics, running, sports, and games to foster virtues such as honesty, fairness, perseverance, and obedience. Coventry children learn through play during daily recess, classroom breaks, and after school clubs.
Our Curriculum
At Coventry, we believe that education is more about formation than information. That being said, a child cannot be formed from nothing. In the Lower School, our curriculum builds a solid foundation in skills (reading, writing, public speaking, mathematics) and in content (history, science, literature, music, etc.). As our students grow in maturity, they learn to form arguments based in reality to think for themselves. All of this is taught in the context of joyful rigor—children are made for hard work and big fun.
